German Soups: Hearty soup recipes to help you through that spring flu

         Winter has come to a close and spring is just beginning...Unfortunately some of us are still catching that dreaded flu bug...Here are some hearty German soup recipes that may help you feel better...If you don't have the cold or flu, perhaps you can make these soups to help yourself stay healthy...
Traditional German Soups:
  • Goulash Soup-a hearty beef vegetable soup for spicy food lovers.  This soup traditionally has about five different types of pepper in it, although recipes vary.
  • Pancake Soup-called pfannkuchensuppe in German.  Made with strips of unsweetened pancakes (taste more like a type of potato) in a beef broth.
  • Potato Soup-called kartoffelsuppe in German.  Often made by adding many other vegetables such as carrots, peas, celery and onions with the potatoes.
  • Split Pea Soup-called Erbspuree in German.  Many recipes add flour to make the texture of the soup smoother, some even add celery roots as they say it makes the soup taste more earthy.
  • Lentil Soup-called linsensuppe in German.  This is a mixed bean soup.  Germans often cut up sausage in their lentil soup to make it a more hearty meal.  
  • Beer Soup-called biersuppe in German, this soup is made with beer.  Cheese can also be added to make a beer cheese soup.
  • Liver Dumpling Soup-called leberknodelsuppe in german.  This soup contains a dumpling made from liver and onions in a beef broth.
  • Garlic Soup-called knoblauchsuppe in German.  This is a creamy soup made with crushed garlic.
  • Horseradish Soup-called meerrettich suppe in German.  This is a creamy soup made with horseradish.
